Bethel Alaska Nursing Camp

Base | Cause

Bethel, Alaska is home to 6,000 residents and is the economic hub for 56 Yukon Kuskokwim (YK) Delta villages totaling over 28,000 people spread out over an area the size of Oregon. The majority of residents are Yup’ik Eskimo, with many still speaking the language and practicing a traditional Yup’ik subsistence lifestyle of fishing, hunting, and gathering.

There are many factors that lead to the overwhelming level of healthcare challenges in this area. It was these challenges and the lack of healthcare education that inspired University of Alaska School of Nursing professors Mary Weiss and Annette Rearden to begin their Nursing camp in 2012.

We are proud to have supported the first year of students at Bethel Alaska Nursing Camp with stethoscopes and blood pressure monitors to assist with their training. We are excited for this next generation of healthcare practitioners in Bethel!
