Floating Doctors works in Bocas del Toro Panama to provide free acute and preventative health care services to the underserved people in the surrounding island villages. One of their main focus in offering healthcare services is reducing child and maternal mortality through food safety/prenatal education, nutritional counseling and clean water solutions.
Overall, Floating Doctors strives to bring the latest communications technologies and specialist medical knowledge to developing countries. Their efforts in Bocas del Toro have been astonishing over the yeas and we have been privileged to participate in their growth each year. Through donations of medical diagnostic equipment we’ve been involved in both Floating Doctor’s medical efforts to the indigenous populations of the surrounding islands of Bocas del Toro and the Senior Center located on the main island.
A day clinic in Terra Oscura, an island in the archipelago of Bocas del Toro:
The Floating Doctors team takes a water-taxi to Terra Oscura from the main island of Bocas del Toro, where there main head quarters is located. This is just one of the many islands in the archipelago Floating Doctors visits regularly. These patients do not have water-taxis at their disposal, so Floating Doctors makes sure they are visited often for regular check-ups.
Once they arrive, the team unloads and sets up for clinic; a pharmacy, scales, a height and weight station and finally intake/exam stations. Terra Oscura has a covered community center that allows for enough space, and saves the equipment and the team from any rain, which is always expected in this area. A portable ultra-sound machine allows doctors to do check-ups for pregnant mothers and inspect any internal medical issues that they may need to refer to the main hospital on the big island of Bocas del Toro.
Check-ups at the Asilo “Senior Center” on Bocas del Toro:
Floating Doctors provides health care to the local senior center or “Asilo” on the main island of Bocas del Toro at least twice a week. Along with medical care, the team takes the seniors for a walk around the island. The communication and personal attention lifts the spirits of these seniors who will often go without visits from family or friends.
