Friends of Fort Liberté has been operating in Forte Liberté, Haiti since their first mission in 1973. They were established as an official non-profit in 1993, opened the King’s Orphanage in 1996 and in 2014, The Eben-Ezer Medical clinic was built.
The Eben-Ezer Medical Clinic’s mission is to care for the sick. The Eben-Ezer Clinic will promote wellness and good health practices to the communities we serve while providing excellent acute, chronic and supportive care for patients without regard to cultural differences, religious affiliation, or ability to pay.
Several medical mission teams visit the clinic each year, providing much needed supplies and services. They ask each visiting medical team to provide training or workshops for the Eben-Ezer Clinic staff allowing them to share the training with their patients and community. Opportunities for staff continuing education are being explored. Short-term goals include providing a standard curriculum for those events and materials for sharing with the community.
American teams also provide outpost clinics when they visit Fort Liberté. They take medicines and supplies with them, they screen for hypertension and blood sugar, treat acute illnesses and make referrals for dental and eye care as resources allow. Those patients needing chronic care are referred to the Eben-Ezer Clinic. FFL tries to arrange transportation for those referrals.
Long-term plans include satellite clinics to regularly serve the populations unable to get to the Ft. Liberté clinic and/or provide a regularly scheduled Tap Tap (bus) to pick up and deliver patients to the in-town clinic.
“This is another dream – but in Ft. Liberté, we’ve seen dreams come true.” – Bonnie Woodrum, Friends of Ft. Liberté US clinic committee chair
In 2012 and again in 2016, we had the privilege of supporting Friends of Fort Liberté’s Eben-Ezer medical clinic with medical diagnostic equipment that cannot regularly afford to replace or repair. Equipment will also be used at satellite clinics regularly. We hope to help Ft. Liberté continue their effort and one day achieve their dreams.
