On April 28, 2014, Winston Medical Center took a direct hit from an EF4 tornado that demolished over three homes in Winston County and took the lives of ten of its residents. Despite this tragic event, the Medical Center was able to protect the one-hundred and twenty-five residents and patients in the facility while at the same time managing to treat new patients who came to the emergency room as the result of their storm related injuries.
A temporary hospital was created for patients and residents as the damage to the Medical Center was repaired. Through tireless efforts, the Winston Medical Center re-opened one year later and in 2017 they received a MHA Outstanding Mississippi Small Rural Hospital Award.
