TROUBLESHOOTING

> STETHOSCOPES

Using a dual-head stethoscope

• Pre-angled headset should point forward (toward your nose) as you place the eartips into your ears.

• Do not use a stethoscope with the pre-angled headset pointed towards you (toward the back of your head), as this will be uncomfortable and impede sound transmission.

• The green indicator dot should be facing the side of the chestpiece that is being used. For example, if you want to activate the bell, the green dot should be facing the bell.

• If you want to use the diaphragm side of the chestpiece, have the green dot face the diaphragm.

What do I do if I can’t hear out of my stethoscope?

HEADSET

• Check that the pre-angled headset is facing forward (toward your nose)so the eartips are in line with the natural angle your ear canals.

• Check that the individual sides of the headset do not rotate past a 15 degree angle.

• Check if any part of the headset feels loose or has broken inside of the tubing.

• Check the connection from the headset to the tubing for any separation.

TUBING

• Inspect the tubing to make sure that there are no punctures.

• Inspect the connection between the tubing and the chestpiece to ensure it is secure.

CHESTPIECE

• Make sure the chestpiece is rotated so that the green dot is facing the side of the chestpiece you want to use.

• Inspect the bell to make sure that nothing is lodged in the opening.

• Inspect the diaphragm to make sure it is not cracked or broken.

• Make sure there is a good seal between the retaining ring and diaphragm and that the diaphragm is not popping out.

• Why is my tubing losing flexibility?

Exposing your stethoscope to extreme heat or extreme cold can cause the tubing to take on an undesired shape and harden. To avoid this, do not leave your stethoscope in the sun, on hot surfaces, or in extremely hot or cold environments, and do not hang your stethoscope on your vehicle’s rearview mirror.

• What do I do if the diaphragm breaks or comes off?

There’s no need to send your stethoscope back to us—you can replace it yourself, using the extra diaphragm that came with your stethoscope, or a new one requested through the Free-Parts-for-Life Program.

Remove the retaining ring and old diaphragm by gently pressing the retaining ring down towards the chestpiece with your thumbs.

Rub the retaining ring (just the plastic ring, without the diaphragm) between your hands or dip in warm water and dry thoroughly to make it more flexible and easier to work with when placing back on chestpiece.

Examine the inside of the retaining ring and find the sharper, thinner edge.

Hold the ring so the sharper, thinner edge is facing away from you.

Place the diaphragm into the ring with the MDF Instruments logo facing away from you. Slowly fit the diaphragm into the ring, beginning on one side and working around in a circle until all sides of the diaphragm are in contact with the retaining ring.

Flip the new diaphragm and retaining ring around so that the MDF logo is facing toward you. Use your thumbs to slowly work it on to the chestpiece, going in a circle and doing one section at a time.

• Applying the retaining ring with diaphragm to the chestpiece

1. Hold the chestpiece facing toward you with one hand and with the other hand hold the retaining ring with the diaphragm facing toward you.

2. Place the retaining ring with diaphragm on the chestpiece. Use your thumbs to press firmly, starting at one end. Use your right thumb to work your way half way up, then hold firmly with your right thumb.

3. Repeat step 2 on the other side of the retaining ring with your left thumb to completely apply the retaining ring with diaphragm to the chestpiece.

4. Inspect the chestpiece to make sure the diaphragm is not popping out. If the diaphragm is popping out from the retaining ring, repeat steps 2 and 3.

How do I clean my stethoscope?

o Use alcohol to clean the eartips and to wipe the diaphragm of your stethoscope.

o Use warm water or mild detergent and a clean rag to clean the tubing of your stethoscope and allow to air dry.

o Do not use acidic or alkaline cleaners on stethoscope, use only isopropyl alcohol.

• Can I get my stethoscope engraved?

Yes, MDF stethoscopes can be engraved. However, we do not offer customized engraving.
