Unsung: Emily Porter

I am a senior at Pepperdine University studying Sports Medicine. Aside from still pursuing my undergraduate degree, I am a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), providing in-home health care for the elderly. When I “grow up,” I want to be a Physician Assistant (PA), so I am working to finish up my prerequisites before applying to PA programs.

When things get difficult, what keeps you going?

My family, friends, and faith continue to keep me going in the direction of my dreams.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting in your position?

If you’re on the fence about working in healthcare, get certified as a Nurse Assistant. Caring for others has only solidified my dreams of becoming a PA. You learn skills that are useful whether you end up going into healthcare or not.

Why did you choose to be where you are today?

I really questioned what I wanted to do with my life freshman year of college, but I decided to become a Physician Assistant while on a month-long medical mission trip to Fiji. I became friends with a 13-year-old girl in Fiji named Anna who needed a lipoma on her foot removed. Since the clinic we were in only had local anesthetic, Anna wanted me to hold her hand during her surgery. After the surgery, she went back to her village. I didn’t think I was going to ever see her again, but later when we were going to the airport, I saw her running down the road to tell me good-bye. She gave me a huge tapa cloth painting that her mother made to thank me. I never knew I could make that much of an impact on someone else’s life until that day!

What does “Crafting Wellness” mean to you?

It means taking the time to see each patient as an individual so that you can care for them and treat them based on their specific needs.
