Unsung Heroes, Nursing Edition: Katharine Herndon

Unsung Heroes, Nursing Edition: Katharine Herndon

My first experience with healthcare was during a mission trip to Tegucigalpa, Honduras. We were visiting a small slum outside the city and a physician who had accompanied us set up an ad hoc clinic. I assisted him all day as we pulled out the painful rotting teeth that afflicted many of the older residents. Seeing how thankful they were and how their lives were transformed for the better ultimately set me on the path towards a career of nursing.

After surviving the rigors of nursing school and practicing in the ICU for the past 5 years I can honestly that I love my job more than ever. Every day I get to help patients and their families navigate some of the most difficult times of their life. Although I started out in this vocation in order to help others, I could never have imagined the deep connections I have made with my patients. As a nurse, especially in the ICU, I spend the most time with my patients and so I view it as my responsibility to advocate for them as they move through the healthcare system. Being invested with the trust of my patients is one of the greatest privileges in my life and although the job is tough I know I am where I am meant to be.
