Unsung Heroes, Nursing Edition: Nehna Dearth

Unsung Heroes, Nursing Edition: Nehna Dearth
May 10, 2016 No comments

I watched my sweet friend Nehna (who is a Registered Nurse) care for a very sick patient a few weeks ago. The patient had transitioned from the ICU to a step down unit, and because of being intubated for weeks, this woman has a long and hard path of recovery ahead of her. She lost majority of her muscle mass and her whole body was limp. This woman probably hadn’t seen the outdoors in over a month, let alone left her hospital room! Nehna (along with some extra hands) transitioned her safely into a neuro chair and got her ready to sit upright. I was walking one of my patients down the hall and saw Nehna and her patient, parked in the neuro chair, looking out the windows with the best views at our hospital. She was talking with her trached patient, reading her lips, and carefully conversing. She pushed her patient around to every open window there was on floor, because that was the only time her patient was probably going to get out of her room again for a while. We all know that was time consuming, and I’m sure Nehna had a billion other things to do at that moment, but she committed to making a difference that day! She went the extra mile in her care. She was intentional. And I know that meant the world to her patient! I was just a witness, and it meant the world to ME! It made ME want to be a better caretaker and go that extra mile!

Nehna’s dedication and love for her profession and her patients shines every day! This was just one of the many interactions I’ve witnessed with Nehna going above and beyond with her patients in such a personal and touching way. I always get so excited when I get to work along side her! She is a phenomenal nurse and a beautiful person! She deserves to be praised!
– Kelsey RowellI love people and I like making a difference, especially in their hardest times! Nursing is a part of who I am! It is an honor and joy to take care of patients and their families day in and day out! I am so honored to be a part of this beautiful profession and no matter how hard my days can be, I love being a nurse every day!
