Unsung Heroes, Nursing Edition: Priscilla Curran

Unsung Heroes, Nursing Edition: Priscilla Curran
May 11, 2016 No comments

Priscilla Curran was nominated by two individuals, her patient Kelsey and Kelsey’s friend, Becca. Priscilla is one of many nurses who treats their profession as their calling and passion, tirelessly tending to patients and friends with grace and humility. It was clear from the moment Priscilla stepped into the room that Priscilla was not “just a nurse” but truly Kelsey’s and Becca’s friends. They chatted about wedding plans, Harry Potter World, and updated each other on their lives as she skillfully hooked Kelsey up to her medication. Her warmth was instantaneous and her smile infectious. I am very excited to honor Priscilla as an Unsung Hero, below is Kelsey’s and Becca’s explanation on why they have chosen to nominate Priscilla. Priscilla is an incredible nurse who is passionate about her work and cares deeply for all of her patients. For me, what makes her a great nurse is that she goes above and beyond, if I am having a bad day she will sit in my room and talk with me. She makes an effort to know her patients on a personal level. Priscilla always makes me laugh and brightens up my trips to the cancer center. I feel so lucky to have her as a nurse and a friend.

Priscilla Curran, to me, embodies what it means to be a nurse. From the moment that you meet her she emits a very honest and evident air of compassion. She greets her patients with a smile and is constantly working to make them feel more at ease. She stands out against the plethora of medical professionals that we encounter because she has such a genuine love for her practice and the people that she works with. She is the kind of nurse that is constantly working diligently to fulfill the needs of her patients and advocate for them when it becomes necessary. She truly takes an interest in both her patients and the people that surround them as she is someone who understands that care goes beyond simply helping those who need medical attention and extends to the friends and family who offer support to patients. Nursing goes beyond simply tending to the physical needs of a patient but rather extends to the emotional wellbeing. Priscilla has mastered this with grace and skill and it is reflected in every aspect of how she extends care to her patients.

– Becca

For me, being a nurse is fulfilling my life calling and dream that I’ve had since I was in the 6th grade. It’s an incredible honor to be a nurse, to assist those in my care to my best ability, and to see an improvement in their health. I get the privilege to come along side my patient, as well as their family and friends, and aid them in their current health situation. Whether it’s a one-time meeting or long-term treatments, I am humbled that at the end of my day I’ve had the opportunity to take care of them not only physically, but also emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. This is why I love nursing – the joy that comes from caring for a person holistically is priceless.
