Second Stories with Emily: Village Kindness

Second Stories with Emily: Village Kindness
September 25, 2015 No comments

Part I of Emily Kirk’s Second Stories, Emily shares her experience as she meets the village she will be serving for the first time. If you have not yet met Emily, please read her intro here and join us as we follow Emily on her adventure!

As I rode the boat across Lake Victoria to my new home in a local Ugandan village, I became anxious that the local people might not be as excited as I am to meet them. What if they didn’t like me? What if they didn’t like the fact that I was coming into their village?

All my worries were immediately put to rest as we approached the dock. People and children ran out to us to greet us. As they helped us unload the luggage from the boat and carry it up the hill to our new home, they greeted us with “you are welcome” meaning “you are welcome here.” I was absolutely blown away by their helpfulness and welcoming spirit.

As I become more acquainted with life here, I have come to realize that their kindness is just a part of Ugandan culture. Ugandans are raised to be welcoming, caring and patient. Their kindness isn’t just a front either; after being here for 3 weeks they are just as, if not more, involved, loving and kind.
