What Does a Nurse Look Like?

What Does a Nurse Look Like?
August 2, 2016 No comments

We’ve all, at one point or another, judged a book by its cover, only to realize later that our assumptions were premature and incorrect. It’s a bad habit that most of us should grow out of, but some seldom do. Nurse Mary Walls Penney became the victim of this particular bad habit when the cashier at her local grocery store judged her by the color of her lovely locks.

“I’m surprised they let you work there like that,” the cashier said to nurse Mary.

But Mary didn’t let the cashier shame her for the color of her hair. Instead, Mary took to Facebook to let people know that her and other medical professionals are no less effective in their service to people because of their outwardly appearances. Mary went on to say that her tattoos never discouraged someone from reaching out to her for a comforting touch, her multiple ear piercings never interfered with her listening to her patients fears and concerns, and her tongue piercings never kept her from speaking words of encouragement to a grieving patient.

There is no “proper nurse” look. Nurses, just like any other professionals, express themselves differently and are diverse in appearances and personality. Let us not make the same mistake as the cashier and judge a book by its cover. We would be doing a disservice to all the wonderful medical professionals out there like nurse Mary who provide invaluable service to patients – rainbow hair or not.
